The song is so beautiful, the voice and voices, the instruments. The words so sad and poignant I wanted to cry. Rufus Wainwright is a gem and a rarity.
All that I've been feeling for a while now I suddenly heard on the radio expressed so beautifully. It took my breath away and brought me to tears. Video is amazing as well. So refreshing. So talented!
the lyrics will be misconstrued by the jingoist 32 percenters who still support Bush, but the song struck me as perfect, a balanced, sorrowful elegy about America.
And, yeah, I wept.
Rufus est magnifique dans tous les sens. Il donne l'impression d'être plus mature que jamais. Je crois qu'il a trouvé un équilibre dans sa vie et nous le ressentons quand nous écoutons son nouveau disque. Bravo.
i am actually writing a semester paper in music about this video at the moment and i thought that the three veiled sisters represent the women with jesus at his crucifiction or alternatively the three fateful sisters in ancient mythology. but jackie kennedy??? whaaaat???
I haven't been moved by music that much since I saw Renee Fleming sing Strauss live.
It's the intensity of your music that makes you different. I hope I can have a drink with you one day. See you in Central Park. -Sean
Rufus is a visionary.
The song is a tortured anthem of an American who has been disillusioned in So many ways, including being devalued as a Gay man, having been stripped of his god-given rights.
Very timeless and MOVING tribute to freedom in AMERICA.
Going to a town is great, but the rest of the new CD seems to be a step in new direction, not my direction... Rufus, I miss your fantastic, moving voice, your fabulous, intense identity. I'm going to see you in Germany, hope you will sing some old songs too- because you have just changed my world into more music world. So, thank you for that!
I'm a new Rufus fan, all things considered. The first time I heard and saw him was in "Leonard Cohen's, I'm Your Man video. His voice stayed with me until I took out all the CD's available at my local library and listened and listened and listened.
It's impossible to describe his voice, his talent without sounding mushy, but well here goes...
when I hear your voice, I want to curl up inside it and breathe. It releases me from the impossibilities of life, of the drudgery of every day living and throws me into a place where I can close my eyes and just be carried off to where anything's possible.
Here's to you Rufus!!! I love you and you damn amazing talent!

Hope you bring out a DVD in the future which includes this actual footage, rather than live at a concert. You just look so amazing and your voice - it takes my breath away!
This video is the most remarkable I've ever seen- it's a piece of art. Absolutely beautiful; I can't believe more people aren't acquainted with his music!
I don't find words for say my emotion...shivers,smile...it's a part of paradise....I swear : You are so beautiful, the melody is so beautiful, the clip is so beautiful...all is perfect !
I heard you have write this song in 5 minutes...the paradize in 5 minutes ! Are you an angel ?? (Yes, you are =D)
I love the moment "making my own way home"
Oooooh it's so beautiful, bewitching, I can't push in stop...How do you do ?^^
Love you so muuuuch !!!
Big <3 and kiss from me ;)
P.S: I'm sorry for the vocabulary, my site of translation is not so good :s ^^
I'm wondering if this could possibly be related to homosexuality... "Making my own way home/Ain't gonna be alone" "Do you really think you go to hell for having love?"
Unfortunately, many Americans shun homosexuals... "I'm so tired of you, America..." A town that has already been brought down, may be referring to a town that has already stopped being prejudiced against such people, and stopped resisting other ideals? Just a thought. Great song... :) I've been listening to it for several days.... :D
I confess this video doesn't like me (maybe because of the direction of Sophie Muller) but this is maybe my favourite song...so deep, so true, so ....wow!
Dear Rufus --I cannot tell you how much ive been moved by your singing of Leonard Cohens song Hallelujia. I played it over and over until your web site banned me for a while.( Im new to the site and will definitely purchase it:) I light a candle and listen each night. Something about the truth in leonards words and the truth in your beautiful voice and spirit reaches me like nothing else.. I decided i had to go to your concert In Monterey. You could hear a pin drop up in the balcony. Thank you for having the courage/ guts to be who you are. It is a beautiful reflection in all of us. "Going to a town" also speaks to my sentiments --fabulous song
I am also singer -some swing vocals a while back . Even taught swing dance to the staff at Esilon where you visited -fully clothed of course:)
I really love this song, the words and the lyrics...
I was in "Primavera Sound" in Barcelona where Rufus sang it as well.
I may go to Nottingham festival also just to listen again his enchanting voice.
